US Congress reaffirms support for Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia

Chisinau, 13 July /MOLDPRES/ – The United States Congress has approved the resolution expressing support for countries of Eastern Europe and NATO.

According to a press release of the parliament’s communication and public relations department, the United States supports the territorial integrity and political sovereignty of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia, and reaffirms its support for democratically elected governments and people of the three countries, encouraging democratic aspirations.

The document stipulates US commitment to support three states during European integration, ensuring energy security and enhancing trade cooperation.

Similarly, resolution condemns Russian aggression in the region and calls for withdrawal of Russian troops and ammunition stationed illegally on territory of three states. The document calls on allies in Europe and the United Nations to put pressure further on Government of Russia to comply with its international commitments.

The US Congress resolution appeals to State Department for full and active dialogue against Russia's involvement in democratic processes of the three sovereign nations.

Over the past few days, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly reaffirmed, in the Berlin annual session, the need for complete withdrawal of foreign armed forces from territory of Moldova. There were voted three amendments concerning Moldova, namely: peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, withdrawal of Russian troops from sovereign territory of the country and transformation of peacekeeping mission into a civilian mandate with an international mandate.

Also, NATO member countries, at the summit the Brussels, on Wednesday, 11 July, called for withdrawal of Russian military forces stationed on the territories of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine, without consent of the three countries, according with international commitments. In the statement included for the first time in the final declaration of a NATO summit, the support given to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova is reiterated within internationally recognised borders.

The three resolutions of the US Congress, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and NATO Summit take place in the context of approval of UN General Assembly, in June, of a resolution on withdrawal of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region.
