Chisinau, 28 September /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister, Pavel Filip, and UN Secretary – General, António Guterres, discussed today the reform of the UN peacekeeping architecture with a focus on conflict prevention. The Prime Minister appreciated that in January 2018 these conflicts, including the Transnistrian conflict, were included in the list of UN priorities, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.
In June 2018, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that qualified both the foreign military presence and imposition of political conditions for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops as contrary to the international law and constitutional neutrality of Moldova. A new point in the agenda of the current session on "The withdrawal of foreign military forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova" was registered last week.
Pavel Filip mentioned that the withdrawal of the military forces from the eastern region of Moldova will help solve the Transnistrian problem: "We will appreciate your support in setting the attention of UNO to the Transnistrian conflict and the withdrawal of foreign troops to prevent conflicts and maintain peace."
The Secretary – General said that the UN understands the concern of Moldova for the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and withdrawal of foreign troops from the territory of Moldova and would support the efforts made in this direction. Also, António Guterres appreciated positively the UNO – Moldova partnership and expressed his thanks for supporting the reforms initiated within the Organisation.
At the end of the meeting, Pavel Filip invited the UN Secretary General to visit Moldova in the context of a regional visit.
