Chisinau, 1 October /MOLDPRES/- Over 1,000 Moldovans are diagnosed annually with breast cancer, and the disease is the most common cause of death among women. The figures were released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection (MSMPS) in the context of marking throughout the world during October of the International Month of Breast Cancer Awareness.
According to MSMPS, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide and accounts for 30% of all female neoplasias. Globally every 3 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, and every 14 minutes one dies for this.
In Moldova, breast cancer ranks first in malignancy morbidity in women, with about 1,000 new cases per year.
Oncologists say that on-time breast cancer can be treated, so they recommend for women over 20 years self-examination by palpation of breast every month, and if anomalies are found, immediate medical attention is needed. For women over 35, doctors recommend to perform a mammogram at least every three years to ensure they are healthy or once per year after the age of 40.
During October, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection jointly with the Institute of Oncology will conduct a number of national information activities, including: every Thursday, at the Institute of Oncology, there will be held schools with patients, where mammology physicians will provide information on prevention, risk groups, treatment, self-control training and free consultations. Seminars and briefings will be organized within the educational institutions, and information and communication campaigns will be held within the medical and social institutions by distributing informational materials and seminars.
