Lower Prut reserve of Moldova registered in UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves

Chisinau, 14 November /MOLDPRES/ - A ceremony on the handing of the certificate of registration of the Lower Prut reserve in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves took place at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris. This is the first Biosphere Reserve established in Moldova.
At the event, held on 13 November, Moldova’s Ambassador to France, Resident Delegate at UNESCO Emil Druc stressed the importance of the registration of the Lower Prut reserve in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This would contribute to the sustainable development of the region, as well as to the conservation of the flora and fauna of the protected area, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry has reported.
The International Coordinating Council of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme has approved the file on the registration of the Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve at a meeting in Palembang (Indonesia), held on 23-28 July 2018. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves presently has 686 natural sites of international importance in 122 countries.
The creation of the first Biosphere Reserve in Moldova was supported by the European Union through the Joint Operational Programme Romania – Ukraine – Moldova 2007-2013 – a project of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument and co-financed by the states participating in the programme on strengthening the network of protected natural areas for the protection of biodiversity and sustainable development in the Danube Delta and Lower Prut region – PAN Nature, implemented by the Moldsilva Forestry Agency.
The Lower Prut Biosphere Reserve is placed in the southern region of Moldova in the in the easily flooded meadow of the Prut river.
