Book on plastic art issued in Moldova

Chisinau, 12 February /MOLDPRES/ – A monograph, titled: Artistic Process in Moldova (1940 – 2000) by the art historian and critic, doctor of art studies, Ludmila Toma, has been launched at the National Art Museum of Moldova today.
The volume includes 248 pages, in which, apart from the study itself, there are included reproductions in the collections of the nominated museum.
At the event beginning, the director of institution, Tudor Zbarnea, has mentioned that the monograph explores the plastic art of Moldova during a more than half a century historical period. According to the quoted source, the author reveals the problem of the interpretation and creative valorisation of the national traditions, especially present in times of crisis in the evolution of art.
Interviewed by agency, art critic Eleonora Brigalda said that the monograph is elucidated by the Moldovan artistic process, but also the destiny of the plastic artists, works created during this period, and great challenges for Moldova.
"The artists have always been alongside those trends that are specific to contemporary art. In this book, Ludmila Toma made an extraordinary effort to elucidate the problems that existed in the artistic process under socialist realism, when the artists had to comply with the requirements dictated from above and only some valuable artist who had the courage to oppose to the ideological pressure managed to create important works such as Mihail Grecu, Eleonora Romanescu, Valentina Rusu – Ciobanu, Igor Vieru, etc.", specified Eleonora Brigalda.
According to the doctor habilitat in the art studies, Tudor Stavila, the object of study of the monograph was not only the known works, but also forgotten works, mentioned in catalogues and reflected in pictures, publications of plastic art and archive documents. The book is intended for students from humanitarian education institutions, plasticians, art historians and all those interested in the problems of the development of national plastic art.
Ludmila Toma is a doctor of arts studies, associate professor, researcher at the Academy of Music, Theatre and Fine Arts of Moldova (AMTAPM). She is the author of 15 monographs and over 200 scientific and popular science articles. She was awarded the honorary title Om Emerit. Ludmila Toma is the winner of the National Prize of Moldova.
