One hundredth birthday anniversary of famous composer marked in Moldova

Chisinau, 17 February /MOLDPRES/ - The 100th birthday anniversary of composer, singer, teacher, Merited Artist of Moldova Alexei Starcea is marked today.   

Alexei Starcea was born in Chisinau in 1919. In 1937-1942, he studied at the Law Faculty of the Bucharest University and during 1942-1945, Starcea studied vocal music at the Royal Academy of Music and Dramatic Art from Romania’s capital. During 1945-1949, he studied vocal music and composing at the Chisinau-based Conservatoire, presently the Music, Theatre and Fine Arts Academy. In 1945-1947, Alexei Starcea was member of the troupe of the A. Pushkin Musical and Dramatic Theatre. In 1947-1949, he worked as teacher of vocal music at the Chisinau-based music college.  

In 1949, Starcea graduated from the Chisinau Conservatoire. In 1949-1955, he worked as soloist at the Philharmonic from the Russian city of Kemerovo. In 1956, he became member of the Composers’ Union of Moldova. During 1956-57, Starcea worked as professor at the Stefan Neaga Music College from Chisinau. At the same time, starting from 1957 and till 1970, he was soloist at the Chisinau Radio and Television. During 1957-1962, Starcea acted as executive secretary of the Composers’ Union and beginning with 1962 – deputy president of Composers’ Union from Soviet Moldova.

Starting from 1960, Alexei Starcea taught vocal music at the Gavriil Musicescu Arts Institute and during 1966-1967, he was head of department at the chamber vocal music specialty. Alexei Starcea educated many musicians, among whom there were such personalities as I. Bordianu, V. Deducenco, D. Banaru, M. Munteanu, V. Dragoş, O. Hristenko, L. Sokolova, V. Vechilu, I. Cîrstea, L. Gorodova, V. Suleac and others.  

He created numerous vocal and symphony songs, works for chamber instruments, compositions for voice, as well as chorals, processed folk songs. Starcea is the author of the first Moldovan opera, Balada eroică (Heroic Ballad). As singer baritone, he sang songs not only in the mother tongue, but also in Russian, Ukrainian, German, English, Italian and French.  

In 1964, Alexei Starcea was awarded the honorific title of Merited Artist of Moldova. He was also awarded the Badge of Honour. The composer died in Chisinau on 24 August 1974. An art school bears Starcea’s name at present, as a token of high appreciation of his contribution to Moldova’s musical culture.
