More young people from south Moldova Gagauz autonomy to receive scholarships in memory of region's first governor

Chisinau, 20 February /MOLDPRES/ - Two hundred students from the Gagauz autonomy this year will benefit from a nominal scholarship offered in the memory of the first bashkan (governor) of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri (UTA Gagauz-Yeri), Stepan Topal. A decision to this end was taken within a commission led by the autonomy’s deputy governor for social issues, Olesea Tanasoglo, today.
According to the Comrat authorities, the needed sum is provided for in the region’s budget for these scholarships.
Thus, 100 students of the Comrat State University, as well as 100 disciples of those five vocational education institutions from the region will benefit from financial support.
The Stepan Topal scholarships will be provided to young people for good marks in education, those from disadvantaged families, as well as to those who actively participate in the extra-curricular agenda of the institution.
Stepan Topal (born on 8 January 1938 - d. on 29 September 2018) was a Gagauz political figure, who held the position of bashkan of the autonomy on the period 1990-1995. In the last years, Topal was hit by an incurable disease; yet, he continued his civic work in UTA Gagauz-Yeri. In May 2018, Topal was awarded the Order of the Republic.
