Chisinau, 20 February /MOLDPRES/ - The radiotherapy service of the Chisinau-based Oncological Institute today was modernized with a computed tomograph (CT). The apparatus was purchased within a project on technical cooperation between the International Atomic Energy Agency and the government of Moldova.
Attending the event on the inauguration of the new equipment was the state secretary general at the Health, Labour and Social Protection Ministry (MSMPS), Boris Gilca. According to the official, once these advanced medical equipments bought, patients will benefit from innovative treatment and medical employees will be able to work in safety. “We will continue investing in the infrastructure of the medical institutions, so that the medical services meet international standards,” Gilca said.
„Conditions for getting radiotherapy treatment with a high technological accuracy have been created for those over 3,000 patients. The possibility to simulate the radiation treatment through the simulating computed tomograph improves the radiation fields and thus, the expected result is achieved,” the director of the Oncological Institute, Larisa Catrinici, said.
With the help of the new tomograph, physicians will get detailed anatomic pictures which can be used to delimit the tumour volume and internal organs, which are included in the risk zone for radiation and accurately establish the plan for the radiotherapy treatment.
Also today, the radiotherapy service at the Oncological Institute was endowed with local information system for planning with work stations for physicians radiotherapists and medical physicists, which allows all specialists to have access to the structure of the tumour and elaborate the treatment plan.
Data by MSMPS shows that about 2,500 patients annually benefit from radiotherapy.
