Moldovan government approves cooperation agreement with Romanian executive on preventing, combating corruption

Chisinau, 27 February /MOLDPRES/ – The Cabinet of Ministers has approved today the Cooperation Agreement between the Government of Moldova and Government of Romania in the field of preventing and combating corruption, signed on 19 December 2018.

The document will be submitted to Parliament for info. The agreement provides for the creation of an interaction mechanism based on mutually beneficial principles and effective cooperation rules on ​​strengthening the mechanisms for preventing and combating corruption.

So far, the cooperation on preventing and combating corruption with Romanian partners was based on the Agreement between the Executive of Romania, Moldova and Ukraine on Cooperation in the Fight against Crime, signed in Kiev on 06 July 1999. However, this act is aimed at a wider spectrum of cooperation relations and does not cover fully the current developments.

The principles and norms of international law agreed internationally, international liabilities of the Governments of Moldova and Romania, their national laws, current situation, development trends and evolution of corruption phenomenon have been taken into account in project setting, approved today. The rules of the Agreement establish the limits and modalities of cooperation of the parties in the field of intelligence exchange for the efficient investigation of corruption offences.

According to the document, Moldova and Romania will exchange experts in order to acquire best practices in the fight against corruption, intensify the exchange of operative data and info, as well as increase the number of joint investigation teams. The Agreement also gives the opportunity to build trust of development partners and capacity to contribute to managing the EU external border.
