Earth Hour to be marked in Chisinau, throughout Moldova

Chisinau, 29 March /MOLDPRES/ – The Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment (MADRM) holds on 30 March a public event dedicated to Earth Hour, at 19:00, in the square of the Pedestrian street in Chisinau.

The audience will be informed on global environmental initiative, importance of mitigating the phenomenon of climate change and need for environmental protection. "At 20:30 – 21:30, after the lights on the Pedestrian street are turned off, it will be heard relaxing guitar music, accordion, a show of fires and a recital by the orchestra of Carabinieri of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI)," said the sources from MADRM.

Similar actions will be carried out in several localities of Moldova.

And the Government of the Republic of Moldova will mark the Earth Hour. Thus, light in the House of Government will be extinguished on 30 March for 01 hour at 20:30 – 21:30.

Earth Hour has been celebrated since 2007 at the initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). According to it, every year on the last Saturday in March, at 20:30 – 21:30, people from all over the world participate in the greatest global environmental action. The citizens from over 180 countries meet as part of several events to alert mankind to climate change and process of degradation of biodiversity, soils, water resources, forests and food security.

In Moldova, the event has been marked since 2008. According to some estimates, if for one hour, all domestic consumers in Moldova would switch off electricity, it would save about 278 thousand kW/hour. For this energy amount production, there are consumed 86.8 thousand m3 of natural gas and emitted 165 tonnes of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
