Victims of Chernobyl disaster to be commemorated in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 15 April /MOLDPRES/ – The Chernobyl Association in Moldova will hold a march and a rally for the victims of the Chernobyl disaster on 26 April 2019, in the context of 33 years from tragedy.
The events will begin on the morning of 26 April at 10:00 with laying flowers at the Monument of the ruler Stephen the Great and Holy in the centre of Chisinau municipality. There will be a Memorial March at 10:30 – 12:00, and at 12.00 a meeting is scheduled to be held at the Chernobyl Victims Memorial on street Trandafirilor in Chisinau.
Currently, there are over 2,000 persons in Moldova which participated in liquidation of consequences of Chernobyl disaster.
In 2019, there have passed 33 years since the Chernobyl nuclear power plant catastrophe. This disaster is considered the worst accident in the history of nuclear energy.
On 26 April 1986, the 4th reactor of the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Plant exploded at 01:23. All the permanent inhabitants of the city and its surroundings were evacuated because the radiation level had become dangerous. Subsequently, thousands of people, including Moldovans, participated in works to liquidate the consequences of the damage. Many of them have lost their lives as a result of radiation – borne illness.
