Chisinau, 26 July /MOLDPRES/ - President Igor Dodon has urged the parliament to start, without delay, the needed procedures for identifying a candidacy for the office of prosecutor general. Dodon made statements to this effect after a today’s meeting of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP), during which a candidate for this position was to be put forward, had failed over lack of quorum.

Thus, Igor Dodon asked the parliament to set the date of 31 July 2019 as deadline for the putting up and nomination of a candidacy for the office of acting prosecutor general, so that the decree on his/her appointment could be signed not later than 1 August.

„At present, Moldova cannot afford the luxury of maintaining a key institution in a semi-functional regime. Or, the procedure of selection and appointment of the prosecutor general is long-lasting (from 60 to 90 working days) and can affect not only the good work of the staff of the prosecutor’s office, but also the rights of the citizens in the actions ant law and procedures under consideration,” Igor Dodon wrote on his official page on a social network.

CSP today was to propose to the head of state a candidate for the office of acting prosecutor general. The exercise failed because of the lack of quorum at the Council’s meeting. In these conditions, the legislation sees the nomination of the acting prosecutor general under presidential decree, at a proposal by the parliament, with CSP’s approval.
