Moldova, Romania support strengthening cooperation as to improve quality of emergency services

Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/ – The Government of Moldova has strengthened cooperation with Romanian partners as to strengthen the capacity to ensure maximum protection to citizens in emergencies. Prime Minister, Maia Sandu, with Raed Arafat, State Secretary in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Romania and the head of the Emergency Department, have discussed the modalities of intensifying cooperation between subdivisions of emergencies of Moldova and Romania, on Friday, 23 August, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.

PM Maia Sandu emphasised the efficient collaboration with neighbouring state in implementation of SMURD project in Moldova, mentioning that this proved to be a project appreciated by citizens. In this context, the head of the Government welcomed the continuation of SMURD – 02 project which is to be launched in September 2019.

It aims to create a safer area of ​​Romanian – Moldovan cross – border cooperation, by improving SMURD infrastructure and increasing the level of training of specialists. SMURD – 02 provides for a number of measures, including reconstruction and operationalisation of two SMURD operating points in Ungheni and Cantemir, as well as construction of 04 authorised landing platforms – take – off for SMURD helicopters around 04 hospitals in Moldova, in Chisinau, Balti and Cahul. The project has a total value of €10 million, a grant offered by the European Commission (EC) for its implementation.

During the meeting participants also exchanged opinions on the possibility of launching a pilot project in Cahul, which provides for integration of all emergency services in a single unit. Also, there were discussed advantages of setting up a population warning system through mobile telephony to inform the citizens about potential emergencies.

On it, the parties have also expressed their mutual interest and desire to increase joint intervention capacity of rescuers from Moldovan – Romanian border area, ensuring the crossing of special vehicles at border without difficulties.
