Chisinau, 20 January /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Ion Chicu today had a meeting with the members of the ad-hoc working group on justice reform, led by Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe (CoE) Christos Giakoumopoulos. The working group was set up by the Council of Europe to provide support to Moldova in the implementation of the judicial reform, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

In the beginning of the meeting, the PM thanked CoE for the support provided, reiterating that the improvement of the legal system was priority for the Moldovan cabinet.

The head of the Council of Europe’s Delegation highlighted the need for all interested sides to get involved in the working out of the draft law on the justice reform. “We are here to help, to minimize the risks. We will be partners in this process. We are ready to provide the necessary support to Moldova, in terms of consultancy, as well as technical assistance for the successful implementation of the justice reform,” the official also said.

The Council of Europe’s experts recommended that the Moldovan government ensures a truthful process of public discussions on draft laws with all sides interested, including the judges and civil society. Afterwards, the draft could be submitted to the Venice Commission for expertise. At the same time, it is unacceptable to quicken the process only just to manage to submit it to the Venice Commission for consideration at a plenary meeting due in next March. The sides agreed that the draft law on the evaluation of judges might be submitted for expertise at the plenary meeting due in June 2020.

PM Ion Chicu said that the government was fully committed to optimizing the legal system and welcomed the cooperation both with the foreign partners and domestic ones within this process. The prime minister added that the society would be permanently informed about the carrying out of the reform process.
