Chisinau, 19 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu discussed with Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel in Berlin today afternoon. At a request by the German side, the discussion took place in regime of videoconference, because of the tough pandemic restrictions established in Germany.

According to the presidential press service, the head of state thanked Chancellor Merkel for the sustained support Moldova had enjoyed in all years of the chancellor’s mandate and for the assistance the country received on behalf of Germany to combat the pandemic. In this respect, Maia Sandu also pointed out the aid due to reach Moldova in the next weeks, following an earlier phone conversation with Angela Merkel.

„I discussed with Mrs. Chancellor Merkel the recognition of the certificates of vaccination issued in Moldova, in order to allow our country’s citizens freely move in the European Union. We reviewed the domestic situation in Moldova, the challenges which we have faced in the last months and prospects which can be opened by the snap parliamentary elections, as well as the reforms’ agenda. I rely on the fact that Germany will take care that, in current conditions of pandemic, Moldova’s citizens can vote safely at the 11 July ballot. Mrs. Chancellor confirmed her country’s intention to send observers to the polls within the OSCE/ODIHR Mission,’’ Maia Sandu said.

The sides also referred to the stage of the negotiations on the recognition and conversion of driver’s licences for the Moldovan and German citizens. ‘’We appreciate here the German side’s openness to manage the circular migration of seasonal workers from Moldova to Germany. The German government is to finish the preparation of a draft agreement to this end,’’ the head of state stressed.

Another subject of the discussion regarded the security challenges in the region, which concerns us much, as well as Moldova’s relation with the European Union. ‘’In this context, I reconfirmed Moldova’s commitments to the European Union, which we want to observe, despite the delays allowed by the previous governance. Thus, we hope to de-block the macro-financial assistance as soon as possible, which is necessary for Moldova in the current crisis situation,’’ President Maia Sandu said. The head of state noted that Germany was one of the loyal and reliable partners of Moldova – investor, development partner, supporter of our European integration.

„I want this relation to develop as productively in continuation, in common interest. At the end of the discussion, I invited Mrs. Merkel to visit Moldova, when the pandemic situation is friendly,’’ Maia Sandu said.

Moldova’s president is on a two-day official visit to Berlin, at an invitation by the German head of state.
